I’m sure someone has once said…There are things we know, things we don’t know, and thinks we don’t know we don’t know. The rise of online, digital, internet, and everything associated seems to be limitless. Just when you think it has hit its peak, you’re pleasantly surprised and undoubtedly proven wrong again. Summly who very very recently just got acquired by Yahoo! was created by a teen boy who stated that it’s not us (entrepreneurs, trendsetters, change makers, revolutionizers) that should be scared of Google, its Google who should be scared of us. Reflect on what exponential moves and possibilities that have been made and opened within only the past decade. Opportunity has never knocked so hard. And with this integration of social & ecommerce coming to the most astonishing of rises, take Oreo as a fantastic example. They have 32M+ likes on FB, 82M+ on Twitter, 87M+ on instagram and 14M+ on youtube! Here’s a video they just promoted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=pii4G8FkCA4 . And I know what you’re thinking…. “of course! Its Oreo!” but they’ve been doing some really creative things that big companies like them just are not. Is social the future? Is it a fad? Who knows really. There are strong argument for both but for now, it’s really connecting the dots for consumer engagement.
We don’t know what lies ahead but we do know that change is coming and it’s coming fast. It seems that there will be 2 types of people soon: (a) the ones that inspire and create the new and (b) the ones that sit back and enjoy the ride. Whichever you choose, remember that along the way, its important to do one thing: expect the unexpected.
