So its that time of the year where we tend to sit down and look back at what was good and what was not for us and more importantly what can we expect from the future. 2011 saw a lot of Social Media tools exploding onto the front and the last update that we have is that there are close to 500 tools on the market available for social media monitoring. We predict 2012 will be the year where marketers will look beyond social media and focus on building engaging communities. Based on how the market is behaving and functioning we expect 2012 to showing a change in the way is Social Media is used. Here are some of my predictions for 2012.

  1. The presence of Social Media in brands will be taken up as a strategy rather than just a tactic and those who decide to ignore it will probably be left behind.
  2. With more and more Social platforms available brands will have to decide which platforms best define their initiatives and create one universal social strategy for the different platforms that will serve as a single theme for marketing.
  3. With people becoming more open with sharing opinions and information and less concerned with protecting information transparency will come into picture and we would see business and personal lives mixing and becoming one.
  4. Technology would be heavily integrated into Social Media and we could witness some changes which would change the way Social Media is looked at.
  5. Social Commerce will be the big player. Brands will need to learn how to share their whole person to attract more clients as business becomes more and more competitive. The future of Social will be all about sharing and discovering.
  6. Rather than just content creation focus will shift on monitoring and measuring response. Real time response will play a key role as brands try to express themselves through Social Media.
  7. 2012 could see location based services coming into picture, this will allow the end user to just pay through his mobile and in turn will increase location sharing more open.
  8. Facebook Timeline and Google+ brand pages will open up new avenues for brands to connect with consumers, and it will be interesting to see how the transition occurs.
  9. 2012 will see continued growth of smartphone and tablet users, and so mobile content sharing features and the market for native social networking applications will expand.
  10. 2012 will see Social platforms battling out with each other to bring the best out and the end user will see a better output and more profitable environment.
